Wilderness Camps for Troubled Teen Help PDF Print E-mail

Parents sometimes send their teen to a Wilderness Camp when trying to find something that will help their troubled teen stop acting out.  Wilderness camps are known to be difficult, intensive and harsh on troubled teens in hopes that it will scare the teen into behaving appropriately in society.  Many times, this is true of Wilderness camps.  Your troubled teen may come to the camp and be so scared that you will send him back that he won’t engage in deviant behaviors again.

Wilderness camps usually take place in a camp like setting with no amenities.  Your troubled teen will have to work for everything and there will be authorities who will command your troubled teen to do certain activities.  These wilderness camps will teach your teenager about discipline, hard work, working in a group and appreciation for others.  There are many types of wilderness camps; some are long term and some short term.  Some will accept troubled teens that are willing to participate and others will allow involuntary enrollees.  Wilderness camps can be a scare tactic for teens.

In many cases wilderness camp effects do not result in long term changes for troubled teens.  Wilderness camps for troubled teen help are more geared to teens that have just started getting into trouble.  Troubled teens that are being difficult and heading down the wrong track will be resistant to change.  They are set in their beliefs about their activities and they will most likely play the game rather than change.  Playing the games means that your troubled teen may follow instruction and go through the program but as soon as he gets home, your teen will go right back to what he was doing before the camp.

If you want long term change in your teen that has been exhibiting troublesome behavior, wilderness camps may not be the best choice for you.  Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are known to provide what a troubled teen needs to change their behaviors and stop the downward spiral your teenager is taking.  These treatment facilities will work with your troubled teen on a long term basis and take time to change the behaviors your troubled teen has learned.  Your teen will live in a safe and structured environment and be able to continue school.  Many teens do better in these settings since they are able to concentrate on their work and receive individualized instruction.  Since these facilities are longer term, peers interaction is positive and supportive.  Your teen will be able to interact with peers who have been in treatment and can provide encouragement.  Residential Treatment Centers will provide your troubled teen with ongoing therapy.  Specialty boarding schools specialize in behavior modification that will take the inappropriate behaviors your teen has learned and will change them to more appropriate ones.  Through character-building courses and emotional growth seminars, students will learn accountability and respect for others while developing their own self-esteem.  Parents are active participants in treatment and can attend workshops geared to bring parents and teens together to rebuild relationships.  When looking for troubled teen help, you will want a long term solution and residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools can provide this to you.
