Military school may be a quick solution for a troubled teen that has been engaging in problem behavior. Your teen will enter into this military school and immediately be expected to obey and follow orders given by authorities. This is a major issue with many troubled teens and the intense and forceful commands that these authorities provide, may change the views your troubled teen has about you as a parent and other authorities such as teachers.
These military schools will require teens to wear a uniform and perform specific duties each day of the program. These duties will be difficult, labor intensive and sometimes physically demanding. Your child will learn about discipline, appreciation of others and how to work effectively with others in a group. At the end of the program, your teen will want to return home for a break. Some teens will change their behaviors once returning home in fear that they may be sent back to the military school. Military school is a choice for help when the teen has not engaged in troublesome activities for very long. Troubled teens that have been engaging in negative behaviors over a long period of time may need a longer treatment period and a more supportive environment to change.
Military schools may be good for younger difficult teens because it will scare them straight. For troubled teens that are older and set in their ways, residential treatment centers or specialty boarding schools are the best choice. Your teen will be able to receive individualized help with their behavior and receive the support that they need to change the path they are currently taking. These treatment facilities will provide your child with a safe and disciplined living environment so your teen won’t be able to get into trouble. Students interact with other peers who have been at the facility awhile and have already benefited from it. These peers can be positive role models and help in the treatment process. Your teen can receive therapy to learn effective coping strategies and appropriate ways to behave in society. Specialty boarding schools specialize in behavior modification which is especially designed to change inappropriate behavior. Students also participate in emotional growth and character-building courses focusing on self-esteem, accountability and respect for self and others. Your troubled teen will continue to receive education and receive one to one help from a teacher. Parents are encouraged to participate in workshops provided by the specialty boarding school. These workshops help both the teen and parent work out their issues. You will be able to learn about your teen’s treatment, the progress and will be helped in re-establishing the parent and teen relationship that has possibly suffered during the past few years. Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are more appropriate for troubled teens that are resistant to change, these treatment facilities will take the time and care that troubled teens need to make permanent changes in their life.
