Specialized Help for Troubled Teens with Bipolar Disorder PDF Print E-mail

Bipolar Disorder symptoms usually present themselves during young adulthood or teen years.  This is one of the most turbulent times for teenagers as it is, when you add in Bipolar Disorder symptoms, many teenagers turn to troublesome activities to cope.  These deviant behaviors are related and are a result of the symptoms that teenagers experience. 

Bipolar Disorder has two sets of symptoms associated with this psychological disorder.  Your troubled teen with Bipolar Disorder will cycle through depression and mania.  When your teen is depressed, the teen will have the symptoms of severe depression.  The depression can present itself before or after mania episodes.  In a manic episode, your teenager will feel that they are on top of the world and can do anything.  Mania can present itself in many forms, some teens become impulsive.  These teens make irrational decisions and don’t think about the consequences of their actions.  This causes teens to engage in deviant behavior or enter into harmful situations.  Some troubled teens with Bipolar Disorder during the manic phase will become resentful and angry.  Because of this hostility, the teenager can also turn to violence and criminal activities.  After the manic episodes, your teen will usually come down from the high of the mania and become depressed.  

Troubled teens with Bipolar Disorder can find treatment by visiting their medical doctor which will result in a psychiatric evaluation and referral to a psychiatrist.  The psychiatrist will also conduct an evaluation and prescribe a psychotropic medication for your teen to take.  This medication will help balance the depression and mania that your teen feels.  Another good treatment option for your troubled teen with Bipolar Disorder is counseling or therapy.  As troubled teens go through manic episodes they learn certain inappropriate or criminal behaviors.  These behaviors have been learned and may continue if not corrected.  Therapy can help with understanding the symptoms of Bipolar, treatment and changing behavior. 

Sometimes troubled teens with Bipolar Disorder need specialized care in addition to their medication.  Due to the behavior the troubled teen has engaged in, the teen may need to be placed in a secure and structured living environment to learn appropriate ways to live in society.  Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are two options for troubled teens with Bipolar Disorder. 

Residential treatment centers will provide the safe living environment your troubled teen needs to focus on treatment.  Your teen will be able to get individualized education from teachers on site.  These teachers are able to work with your teen one on one so that your teen can get the extra help they need to learn the material.  Residential treatment centers also provide the therapy that your troubled teen with Bipolar Disorder needs in conjunction with medication.

Specialty boarding schools provide the same structured living and academic setting, plus emotional growth and behavioral modification.  Character-building courses teach self esteem, accountability and respect for self and others.  Behavioral medication is useful for troubled teens with Bipolar Disorder since these teens have learned behaviors that need to be changed.  Specialty boarding schools involves you as the parent in the treatment process.  These schools hold workshops that will promote relationship building and an understanding of your teenager’s behavior.
