Dealing with Troubled Teen Pregnancy |

|
Teen pregnancy is on the rise in America. Troubled teens look for acceptance from peer groups rather than parents or other adults. Because of this, teens sometimes end up in receiving advice and encouragement from peers who pressure them into deviant or criminal behavior. Some teenagers find themselves in risky situations as a result of the pressure they receive. These risky situations can result in troubled teen pregnancy.
Once troubled teens receive attention and recognition from peers this makes teens crave more acceptance and they will engage in riskier behavior. This behavior can include unprotected sex. Not only do these teens place themselves at risk for a sexually transmitted disease but unplanned pregnancies as well.
Teen pregnancy can be actually be planned, to the surprise of the parent or guardian. Some troubled teens feel that having a baby will keep their boyfriend or make them more popular. These teens will seek out sex to become pregnant. Teen pregnancy is rising because of this glorified view of having a baby.
If your teen has become pregnant and has already had the baby, you may feel that you need some more help in keeping your teen safe and learn to more appropriate behavior. There are two options for you to consider when thinking about getting help for your troubled teen.
Residential treatment centers can provide your teen with a safe living environment. This highly secure and structured place to live will keep your teen from engaging in risky behavior. Your teen will be able to continue his or her education while at the treatment center with individualized instruction. Your teen will also be able to receive therapy. Therapy will help troubled teens learn why their behaviors are inappropriate and ways to change these behaviors. Therapy will help your child deal with the life changing events that have been going on in your teen’s life. This is a stressful time in your teen’s life and this support is critical to treatment.
Specialty boarding schools provide the same safe and structured living and learning environment. Your teen will be able to have positive peer interactions with other teenagers which are important in changing the way that your teen has learned to be accepted by peers. These schools will also work with your troubled teen on modifying behavior, developing self-esteem and respect for herself and others. Behavioral modification will focus on eliminating problem behavior and replace it with appropriate behavior. Specialty boarding schools provide therapy at the parents request just like residential treatment centers but as the parent, you will have an active role in your troubled teen’s progress and treatment. You will be able to attend workshops and learn ways to help your child through the process of recovery. Sometimes troubled teens will alienate themselves from their parents. These workshops will help you reclaim the relationship you had with your teen and start building a healthy connection.
Teen pregnancy doesn’t mean that your teen will have no future. They can turn their life around to become a good mother and have a successful career. Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools specialize in taking troubled teens and turning them into responsible and productive adults. Taking that first step in enrolling your troubled teen is probably the hardest but the best for your teen.
