Options for Troubled Teen Drug Abuse PDF Print E-mail

Teen drug abuse is common among troubled adolescents today.  Many of these adolescents turn to drugs to numb the pain of a broken family life, fit into the tough crowd and give them the courage as well as the lack of conscience to commit crimes or other troublesome activities.  Drugs are a way out for teens who are in constant struggle emotionally and psychologically. 

Teens and Drug Abuse

To understand how to help teens with substance abuse issues, it's important to know what makes teenagers try and become dependent on drugs.  Typically, adolescence is about finding one's identity and joining a group that will provide what that adolescent is looking for to support that identity.  As we know, some peer groups are not comprised of innocent individuals trying to do the greater good.  These friends influence each other to engage in troublesome behavior. 

Some troubled adolescents try drugs as a form of self-medication.  These teens may be experiencing stress in some part of their lives whether it is at home or school.  Drugs gives them the opportunity to get away from reality and numb the emotional pain they feel. 

Drugs can sometimes give people the courage and lower inhibition so that they can do things they normally wouldn't be able to engage in.  Many troubled teens who are involved in criminal activities do so with the help of drug use.  The effects of some drugs will make them feel high, on top of the world and able to do anything no matter the risk.

Help for Troubled Teens with Drug Abuse

Drug abuse in troubled teens is a difficult issue to work with and sometimes outside help is necessary.  Help is available that will teach your teenager about substance abuse.  Teens with substance abuse issues will have to learn what their triggers are for their drug use and what to do with those triggers.  Teens in trouble have a harder time separating themselves from negative peer influences and for this reason, teen drug abuse should be addressed in a more structured and individualized setting.   

Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are two options for troubled teens with drug abuse issues.  Residential treatment centers provide teens with individual and group therapy, AA/NA sessions, learning environments which are structured, experiential and individualized for each student in a highly secure and structured living environment.

Specialty boarding schools will not only help your troubled teen with behavioral modification, character development and academics but it will provide teens with drug abuse issues the chance to live in a Positive Peer Culture where negative peer influence will not be a factor.  Parents take an active part in the recovery process by participating in Parent/Child workshops which will aide in rebuilding the parent-teen relationship. 

Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools will help teens deal with their substance abuse issues. They are given the support and tools to maintain their sobriety and set new healthy, positive goals.  With positive peer support as well as a structured environment and emotional growth courses, your teen will learn techniques and skills to deal with life's stressors.   Struggling teens are given a second chance in these programs to build their character and understand the mistakes they have made in the past.  With troubled teens, drug abuse is a major contributor to continued criminal acts and other negative behavior; Treatment centers and boarding schools can stop these activities and turn your troubled teen into a responsible young adult.
