If your teenager has been engaging in troublesome behavior and you have tried everything to help your teen, you have many options for your child. Boot camps are a popular option and parents usually think of this option before any others. These boot camps are often close to home and they use tough, commanding activities to try to scare your troubled teen enough to snap them out of deviance. These boot camps will teach your troubled teen about discipline. Your teen will be made to listen and follow authority. Boot camps will work with your troubled teen on teamwork by having them work in groups. Appreciation is another lesson that is enforced when your teen is enrolled in a boot camp.
There are many different types of boot camps. You can find a short-term boot camp which can range from a weekend to a week long. This is usually used for teens who just need a short scare to change their thinking of the risky situations they place them self in. There are long-term boot camps available which usually last a couple of months. Jail and prison boot camps are an option which emphasizes the consequences of your troubled teen’s actions and attempts to scare your troubled teen straight.
For troubled teen help, boot camps are best for teens that have just started getting into trouble. Boot camps are intensive and short. Teenagers who have engaged in risky behaviors for a long period of time will be resistant to boot camp. They may follow through with the program but as soon as they return home they may fall right into their past negative behaviors. Boot camps do not work on changing behavior, they only scare your troubled teen in hopes that it will be enough to get them to stop acting out. Another disadvantage of boot camps is that your teen will be surrounded by other troubled teens and teens that are in juvenile detention. Your teen may make some friends and be able to connect with them after the program. Boot camps for troubled teens are good for a quick fix but for a more permanent change you will need to consider other options such as a residential treatment center or specialty boarding school.
Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are secure and structured living environments for your troubled teen. Your teen will be monitored 24 hours a day and will not have the opportunity to engage in inappropriate behavior. Peer interaction is supportive and positive; you won’t have to worry about your teen learning more deviant behaviors from peers or connecting with them later on. Residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools are long term facilities which are ideal for troubled teen help. Your teen will need time to change the behavior that has been learned over a long period of time. These treatment facilities provide your troubled teen with therapy to learn ways to change thought patterns and goals, as well as behaviors. Actually, specialty boarding schools focus on behavior modification, self-esteem, accountability and respect for self and others. Your teen will work intensively on eliminating deviant behavior and replacing it with appropriate behaviors. You won’t have to worry about your teen falling behind on academics either. Your teen will have individualized instruction while at the treatment center or boarding school. Boot camps for troubled teens can be effective but most of the time, a longer more supportive setting is necessary. If you are going to enroll your troubled teen in a program, you will want to enroll your teen in a program that will work the first time around; residential treatment centers and specialty boarding schools provide emotional growth seminars, character-building courses, and the tools and setting that troubled teens benefit from the most.
